William H. "Bill" Cunningham, 85, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend to many passed away August 3, 2015 at the Fulton County Medical Center surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born in Knobsville, PA, William was the son of Lewis and Evelyn "Muzz" (McLaughlin) Cunningham. He lived in Fulton County all of his life and those close called him "Bill", "Uncle Bill" of "Pap". Bill is survived by two brothers (Robert and Fred), his wife Mary Ellen, their children and many grandchildren.
Bill married Mary Ellen Shimer in December 1951. They were blessed with two children: Keith (husband of Connie) and Kirk (husband of Lorraine). They have six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Keith and Connie's children are Darla (companion of Dale), Logan (husband of Amanda), and Devon (wife of Tyler Anderson). Kirk and Lorraine's children are Theron (husband of Dusteny), Kiera (wife of Dustin Keefer) and Ethan (husband of Caitie). Great grandchildren are Cyrus (son of Darla), Rielle (daughter of Kiera and Dustin) and Gavin (son of Theron and Dusteny). All these members of his family live close to Bill and Mary Ellen, a fact that pleased Bill immensely. Numerous friends, cousins, nieces and nephews also loved their time with Bill and he always welcomed their visits.
Bill had a long and varied career that started when he became an ice deliveryman in 1948 and ended when he retired from the position of construction foreman with C. William Hetzer Inc. of Hagerstown, MD in 1995. Those who worked with and for him often mention he was tough, hard-working and fair. Additionally, Bill was a veteran; he served in the Army Engineering Corps during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his family, Bill loved the Lord. He practiced his beliefs in and out of the church. He attended the Sideling Hill Christian Church, Needmore, PA and was a member of the Siloam United Methodist Church, Harrisonville, PA. He was also a mason with Mount Zion Lodge #774, McConnellsburg, PA.
In his free time, Bill enjoyed his garden, music and food. However, his favorite pastime was always hunting. He was most notably a man who knew a good hunting dog and how to train it. He had many fox, rabbit and coon hounds throughout his many years of hunting. He was also formerly a member of the Mason Dixon Fox Hunting Club of Fawn Grove. Through this organization, he attended and participated in both hunts and competitive events with his dogs and fellow hunters.
As he often told us, Pap wasn't yelling. He just wanted us to listen. Pap, we heard you loud and clear and will remember you long and lovingly.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 9, 2015 from 4 to 8 PM at the Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Inc., McConnellsburg, PA with a Masonic service being held at 7:30 PM.
A Memorial service will be held at a later date.
