Rosella S. (Mellott) Souders

Rosella (Curly) Sarah Mellott Souders, 95, of Needmore, PA passed away Monday, September 16th, 2013 at The Shook Home, Chambersburg, PA where she had been a resident since September of 2010. Rosella was born in Andover, PA on April 18, 1918, the daughter of the late William R. and Rose (DeShong) Mellott of Andover, Fulton County, PA.  She married Harry H. Souders on January 6, 1937.  They lived in Needmore until May of 1939 when they moved to a farm they purchased along Covalt Road in Thompson Township.  They were dairy farmers there until 1966 when they moved to another farm along Gem Bridge Road.  Harry passed away from a fall in the barn on November 22, 1974.  Rosella continued to milk 70 head of cows until the spring of 1978. She graduated from Green Hill High School in 1936.  During her years at Green Hill, Rosella was an excellent basketball player and their team was champions.  Rosella was a member  and very active in the Antioch Christian Church where she had served as Treasurer and Secretary.  She enjoyed attending the quarterly and annual church conferences.  She was often preparing food for funerals and church conferences.  She had served on the Thompson Township election board and the Southern States Women's Committee.  She was and avid gardener and worked her garden until she had a stroke in September of 2010.  She did lots of canning, freezing fruits and vegetables and making jams and jellies.  Rosella enjoyed her flowers, square dancing when she was young and playing the card game 500.  She also made many comforters and quilts of which some were embroidered squares of each state with the state bird or flower. Mrs. Souders is survived by Daughter Doris Jean (wife of Harry) Bain of Needmore, PA, Sons Harry Jack Souders (fiance Deb Seville) of Needmore, PA, Henry William (husband of Carol) Souders of Needmore, PA, Grandchildren Joyce Bain and husband Chris McMonigal of Needmore, PA, John (husband of Sherry) Bain of Needmore, PA, William (husband of Rachael) Souders of Needmore, PA, Cynthia Bain Cook (wife of Tom) of Gaithersburg, MD, Jennifer Souders Smith (wife of Lee) of St. Thomas, PA, Kimberly Mellott of McConnellsburg, PA, Great Grandchildren Amanda Bain McNamee (wife of Patrick) of Needmore, PA, Samantha Bain of Johnstown, PA, twins Brylie and Logan Smith of St. Thomas, PA, Madison Akers of McConnellsburg, PA, Destiney Leevy of McConnellsburg, PA, Great Great Grandson Zachary McNamee of Needmore, PA, Nieces Marilyn Morton Strait, Betty Mellott Swope, Nephews Wallace Mellott, Earl Martz, Bob Martz all of Harrisonville, PA and Bill Fogal of Chambersburg, PA.  Preceded in death by brother Grenville Mellott, sisters Geneva Mellott, Thelma Morton, Beulah Martz, Faye Fogal, infant brother Harman, seven month old sister Nannie and foster brother Grover (Tuck) Strait. Religious Service at Antioch Christian Church, Big Cove Tannery, PA, at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 19th, 2013  with Pastor Gerald Waltz and Pastor Roger Truax officiating. Interment at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery, Big Cove Tannery, PA. There will be visitation on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 2 to 8 P.M. at Howard L.
