Mary J. DeShong, 85, of McConnellsburg, PA, passed away Monday, February 2, 2026, in McConnellsburg, PA.
Mary was born on August 28, 1940, in McConnellsburg, PA. She was the daughter of the late John F. and Lillian (Buterbaugh) Black. She was the widow of Max J. Deshong, who she married on June 22, 1958. He preceded her in death on February 9, 2021.
Mary attended the Cito United Methodist Church in McConnellsburg, PA. She enjoyed gardening, canning, the outdoors, country western television, trips to Johnnie's Diner, and her -family-- especially her grandchildren. Mary led a simple life that was full of color, from the Carnival glass collection she displayed in her dining room, to the flowers she tended in the yard-- peonies, azaleas, irises, lilacs, daffodils-- to the cast of characters in her family and friends whom she cherished. She was as vibrant as the people and things she surrounded herself with.
She is survived by her sons, Michael J. DeShong (companion of Donna Rohm), of McConnellsburg, PA and John A. DeShong (fiancé of Arlene Figueroa), of Shippensburg, PA. She is also survived by one brother, John (husband of Jane) Black, of McConnellsburg, PA; three grandchildren; Coty Jay DeShong (fiancé of A'leese Dickerson), of McConnellsburg, PA; Jacquelyn Ann (wife of Granville lll) Washington, of Chambersburg, PA; Jamie Lee (wife of Nathan) Hunter, of Elyria, OH; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings; Nancy Hendershot, Bertha Byers, Dorothy Helman, Lena Mellott and George Black.
Funeral services for Mary and Max DeShong will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., McConnellsburg, PA, with Pastor Dick Bernhard officiating. There will be one hour of visitation held prior to the service on Friday. Interment will be at Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg, PA.
