Gary M. Elias

July 31, 1944 — May 15, 2025

Hagerstown, MD

Gary Mark Elias, 80, formerly of Northern Cambria, PA, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2025 in Hagerstown, MD.

Born on July 31, 1944, in Northern Cambria, PA, Gary was the son of the late Michael Thomas and Mary Francis (Elias) Elias. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Lou (Shireman) Elias, whom he married on November 14, 1970. Mary Lou preceded him in death on August 2, 2023. Despite offering the tongue-in-cheek advice to "stay single"—often in front of Mary Lou—his devotion to her was unmistakable and enduring.

Gary was proud of his Lebanese roots, being the first in his paternal line to be born in the United States. In the 1970s, he purchased and operated Elias Economy Store, a well-known and cherished family business in Barnesboro, PA. His sharp wit, generous heart, and colorful personality made him a memorable presence in the community.

He was known for his bold driving habits—especially around sharp curves—and an unabashed love for good food. But more than anything, Gary cherished his family. He found his greatest joy in his role as a grandfather, a love he symbolized with the license plate "Jidoo 7," a heartfelt nod to his seven grandchildren and his Lebanese heritage.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Elbin (wife of Lance) of Needmore, PA; his sons, Robert Elias (husband of Sophia) of Pittsburgh, PA, and Mark Elias (husband of Melanie) of Frederick, MD. He is also survived by his sister, Agnes Vasil (wife of John), and brothers Michael, George, and Esper Elias, all of Northern Cambria, PA; and sister-in-law Roberta Sarokon of Plumville, PA.

He will be remembered through the lives of his grandchildren—Connor Elbin (husband of McKenna), Carson Elbin, Carter Elbin, Briana Elias, Jacob Elias, Chase Elias, and Claire Elias—who carry forward his proud Lebanese heritage, quick wit, and unmistakable sense of humor.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family invites you to honor Gary's memory by doing something fun with your own loved ones—just as he would have wanted.

Arrangements were made by the Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., McConnellsburg, PA. Online condolences may be expressed at www.howardlsipes.com.
