Betty J. Waltz

Betty J. Waltz, 91, of Big Cove Tannery, PA, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024 at Embassy of Woodland Park, Orbisonia, PA.

Betty was born in Hancock, MD on January 5, 1933, a daughter of the late Ella Mae (Younker) and Elwood  Shives.  She was the widow of Gerald  G. Waltz, who she married on March 31, 1953.  He preceded her in death on November 24, 2017.

Betty was a homemaker and also worked alongside her husband on the family farm.  In her early years she attended a one room school house, which she loved to tell people about, including a local historian who recently interviewed her.  She was a member of Antioch Christian Church in Big Cove Tannery, PA and also taught Sunday School for many years.

Betty was also a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  She especially loved cooking for her family over the holidays and birthday gatherings.  Not only was she a great cook but she also had many other talents such as needlework, crocheting, embroidery and quilting.  She enjoyed gardening, she always had a large garden so she could share the fruits of her labor with family and friends.  She enjoyed raising flowers, violets and dahlias being her favorites, collecting frogs, going on bus trips with her husband, feeding and watching birds and her beloved cat "Fluffy".

She is survived by her daughters Ann (wife of Russell) Hoffman, of Big Cove Tannery, PA, and Drema (wife of Michael) Purnell, of Wells Tannery, PA.  She is also survived by four grandchildren; Beth (wife of Lee) Garner of Huntingdon, PA, Russell (husband of Stephanie) Hoffman of Inwood, WV, Brandon (husband of Flora) Purnell of Newtown Square, PA, Hannah Purnell of Newtown Square, PA, three great grandchildren Allison Hoffman, Kaleb Hoffman and Lilian Purnell.  She was preceded in death by sisters Mary Ellen Tyssens, Mildred Sues Valentine and brother Otis Shives

Funeral services will be held at the Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., McConnellsburg, PA, at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 18, 2024 with Pastor Russell Hoffman and Pastor Michael Purnell officiating. There will be one hour of visitation held prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.  Interment will be at Antioch Christian Cemetery Big Cove Tannery, PA.
