Alice J. (Deshong) Mellott

Alice Jenny DeShong Mellott, 83, formerly of Harrisonville, PA passed away Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016 at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, PA She was the daughter of the late Goldie Catherine (Mellott) DeShong and Harry  Raymond DeShong.  She was the widow of George Nhyle Mellott who passed away on August 5, 2010. Born on August, 28, 1932 at her parent's home on Pleasant Ridge, Alice graduated from the Needmore School in 1949.  Alice and George were married on May 29, 1950 in Hagerstown, MD and were the parents of ten children: Dianna L. (wife of William, deceased) Rohm, George A. (husband of Linda) Mellott, Bonnie C.M. (wife of Randolph) Keefer, Harry N. (husband of Susan) Mellott, Barry S. Mellott (Deceased), Brian D. (husband of Jolene) Mellott, Alice L. (wife of Brian) Gordon, Lynn R. (partner Rob Cook) Mellott, Shawn G. (husband of Laura) Mellott, Becky A. (wife of Rodney) Peck, twenty-five grandchildren and thirty-three great grandchildren.  Preceded in death by son Barry S. Mellott, sister Peggy Daniels, brothers Ross and Walter DeShong. Alice attended the Nurse's Aide Program at Chambersburg Hospital, was an active member of the Democrat Party where she served on the Democrat State Committee, member of the Sideling Hill Christian Church as well as their Ladies Aide and member of the Green Hill Sewing Club.  Throughout the years, she was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross, the Fresh Air Program where she was Fresh Air Mother of the Year and a volunteer for the hospice program. George and Alice raised their family on a farm and loved rural life.  They raised their own meat, grew their own produce and it was not unusual for Alice to can over 2,000 quarts of food every summer.  They loved children and frequently had overnight guests who needed a place to stay for a time.  Alice was a "mother" to many more children than her ten biological children.  Alice and George were frequently heard saying, "There is always room for one more." Religious Service at Sideling Hill Christian Church, Needmore, PA, at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 25th, 2016  with Pastor Bill Swope and Pastor Dick Bernhard officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, March 24th, 2016 from 2 to 8 PM at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Inc., McConnellsburg, PA.  There will also be visitation one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Interment at Sideling Hill Christian Cemetery, Needmore, PA.
