Mary Margaret Sexton, 104, of Needmore, PA passed away Saturday, May 18th, 2019 at her residence.
Mary, who was a full blooded Cherokee Indian and belonged to the Monacan Indian Nation, was born in Bear Mountain, VA on August 2, 1914, the daughter of the late Lula (Branham) and Reese Adcock. She was the widow of Clarence A. Sexton whom she married on November 26, 1943 and he passed away on July 15, 1998.
Mrs. Sexton was a member of the Sideling Hill Christian Church in Needmore, PA where she served in the Ladies Aide and the Woman's Auxiliary at St. Paul Luthern Church in Baltimore, MD where she took care of the decorating on holidays and cleaning the church.
Mary started working at the age of twelve in Lynchburg, VA as a Nanny and then worked at a Baltimore, MD sandwich shop before going to work at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard during WWII fabricating ship plates and also meeting her late husband Clarence there. After that, she worked for the McCormick Spice Company in Baltimore, MD. Mary and Clarence then moved to Fulton County in 1965 where she was a very busy homemaker. Mrs. Sexton loved her family, her garden and taking care of her flowers.
She is survived by son Clarence "Ellwood" Sexton, of Needmore, PA, granddaughters Erica J. Sexton, of Needmore, PA, JoAnn D. (wife of Michael, Sr.) Chilcote, of McConnellsburg, PA, great grandchildren Robert Shehan, Elizabeth Shehan-Hussein, Jonathan Chilcote, Michael Chilcote, Jr., Lindsey New, Chastidy Chilcote, great great grandchildren Layne Shehan, Hadley Shehan, Adam Hussein, Hannah Hussein and nine step-great great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Marjorie A. Sexton, sisters Estelle Adcock, Mitzy Berryman, brothers Aubrey, Bentley and Chester Earl Adcock.
Visitation will be Friday, May 24th, 2019 from 6 to 8 PM at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Inc., McConnellsburg, PA. There will also be visitation one hour before the service on Saturday at the church.
Religious Service at Sideling Hill Christian Church, Needmore, PA at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 25th, 2019 with Pastor William Swope and Pastor Lyle Mellott officiating.
Interment at Sideling Hill Christian Cemetery, Needmore, PA.
